Status and Strategy for Spiny Waterflea Management

چکیده
The spiny waterflea, formerly known as Bythotrephes cederstroemii, is a large planktivore of the suborder Cladocera and can have dramatic effects on zooplankton communities by altering the trophic structure in invaded waters (Yan et al. 2002). They can grow to lengths of 15 mm with females growing larger than males. The spiny waterflea has a large compound eye and well-developed abdomen with an extremely long tail twice the length of the body (Branstartor 2005, Kelly 2013); the tail has three to four spines and lacks a terminal loop. Lack of a terminal loop distinguishes the spiny waterflea from Cercopagis pengoi, another invasive species in the Great Lakes basin. Fully developed parthenogenetic individuals have three barbs while fully developed sexually reproducing individuals have four barbs. Adult females also have a distinctive brood pouch on their back (Liebig 2014).

Invasion genetics of the Eurasian spiny waterflea: evidence for bottlenecks and gene flow using microsatellites.
The Eurasian spiny waterflea (Bythotrephes longimanus) is a predacious zooplankter that has increased its range in Europe and is rapidly invading inland water-bodies throughout North America's Great Lakes region. To examine the genetics of these invasions, we isolated five microsatellite DNA loci with between 5 and 19 alleles per locus. We sampled three populations where B. longimanus has been ...
متن کاملGenetic diversity within the Iranian spiny-tailed lizards and predicting species distribution in climate change conditions
There are different methods to investigate the effects of climatic fluctuations on the biota, two of which, molecular phylogeography and SDM, are the most useful tools to trace the past climate induced modifications on species’ geographic distributions. In this study, seven samples were collected from the species distribution range in Iran for the purpose of measuring the genetic variation with...
متن کاملDeveloping population models for informing the sustainable management of the Murray spiny crayfish (Euastacusarmatus) and the Glenelg spiny crayfish (E.bispinosus) in Victoria
Population models can be a useful tool for identifying knowledge gaps to guide future research, ranking different management scenarios, and assessing the risk of extinction and conservation status of a target species. The process involves specifying a set of rules based on the life history of the species that govern how the number and distribution of individuals within the population change ove...
متن کاملParasitic fauna of spiny eel Mastacembelus mastacembelus from Greater Zab river in Iraq
A total of 128 spiny eels Mastacembelus mastacembelus (Mastacembelidae) were collected from theGreater Zab river at Iski Kalak town, west of Erbil city, Kurdistan region, Iraq, from July 2007 to the end ofJune 2008. The fish were examined for ecto and endo parasites. The study revealed the existence of 16species of parasites (with a total prevalence of 89.06%) including: two species of protozoa...
